A strong advocate for nutrition and health, food safety, alcohol policy, and sound science since 1971, The Center for Science in the Public Interest also boasts the largest-circulation health newsletter in North America, the award-winning Nutrition Action Healthletter. Executive director and founder Michael Jacobson, Ph.D. and his team of scientist advocates are an organized voice for the American public on nutrition, food safety, health and other food-related issues, seeking to educate the public, advocate government policies that are consistent with scientific evidence, and counter industry's powerful influence on public opinion and public policies. CSPI's accomplishments include nutrition labeling and efforts in schools for nutritious lunches and against junk food and soda options.
Over the past several years The Elfenworks Foundation has supported the CSPI's efforts to ensure that all children, no matter what their socioeconomic status is, have access to healthy and nutritious food daily. CSPI's innovative campaign is working at the state level providing a fruit or vegetable snack each day (often the only nutritious snack they get) and removing foods of low nutritional value from cafeterias and vending machines at public schools nationwide. This summer the federal government will consider a national school foods bill inspired by CSPI that will once and for all ensure higher food nutrition standards at our children's public schools. Further, Elfenworks Foundation is behind CSPI's efforts to stem the insidious nature of junk food marketing communications campaigns aimed at children. We can all agree that less is more when it comes to marketing junk food to kids.
