San Francisco Chronicle
* Feature Article! *
We are living in a new economy with new risks, new anxieties, and unprecedented levels of inequality, and Pathways is dedicated to making sense of this new world and devising policy that is tailored to it," notes David Grusky, Director of The Stanford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality and one of the senior editors of Pathways. "We invited the top Presidential candidates as of early November - Clinton, Edwards, Obama, Guiliani, McCain, and Romney - to discuss whether a new war on poverty should be fought. Although none of the Republican candidates took up the challenge, the three top Democratic candidates have come out with aggressive statements that push the debate on poverty and inequality policy forward." Updating the federal poverty measure - Source: San Jose Mercury News
Stanford University scholars are working to create a more accurate way of measuring poverty than the federal government formulas in place since 1963. The only factors that have been used to determine the federal poverty index are income, family size and family composition. The proposed Stanford poverty index would also account for government benefits, such as food stamps and tax credits, and expenses, such as child care and heating bills... [more]

A plan to end homelessness that may work - Source: San Jose Mercury News
The honchos for helping the un-housed in Santa Clara County have a bold new plan to end homelessness... to revolutionize the way government and other agencies work to get those without homes into housing for good. The commission wants to move away from relying on one-night shelters. Instead, the idea is to get the hard-core homeless into permanent housing while providing help for mental illness, addiction and other problems that keep them trapped outside. . . [more]

Stanford Center goes to Press to Battle Poverty - Source: San Francisco Chronicle
With the economy eclipsing the Iraq war as Americans' top concern this election year and the gap between rich and poor at its widest in 80 years, the timing of a new magazine on economic inequality seems right on the money. Timely, too, are the contributors. The inaugural issue of Pathways. . . [more]

The war on poverty has a new arsenal: Stanford's recently-launched Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality (SCSPI), which opened this fall as part of the Stanford Challenge. "The Stanford Challenge is all about rededicating the University, orienting it to solving the world's problems," said SCSPI Director David Grusky, a professor of sociology... [more]

Stanford's new goal: Rethink poverty - Center Hopes to Spark a National Discussion - Source: S.J. Mercury News
David Grusky thinks it's time for a revolution in how we think about poverty, just as Silicon Valley helped transform how society thinks about green issues. . . [more]

Angela Blackwell Speaks on Poverty - Source: National Public Radio - Marketplace
Finally, a couple of presidential candidates are talking about poverty, and the American people are wondering what took them so long. More than three-quarters of all Americans support housing, minimum wage, child care and tax policies that reduce poverty . . . [more]

Professor David Grusky hopes to build a "clearing house" for data on poverty, inequality. Source: Stanford Daily News
With a web-based center for trend data, journalists, politicians, and policy makers at all levels could have immediate access to a wealth of information, making it possible to monitor poverty and inequality just as easily as monitoring economic output. Grusky says that this access is necessary now, because his generation dropped the ball on poverty and inequality. As a consequence, he says, every American loses, not just those afflicted by these diseases. In addition to seeing the existence of poverty and inequality as moral problems, Grusky argues that they create huge externalities through raising crime rates and increasing the national health care bill, among other things. In other words, they affect the bottom line and should be treated accordingly. Grusky hopes that his work can help prepare the next generation to face the looming spectre of poverty and remove this social blight.
